This page says what General Knowledge keeps about the people who play, what it is used for, and how you can see, download or delete it. General Knowledge follows the Brazilian data protection law (LGPD, Law 13.709/2018).
Who is responsible
The site is run by Pedro Weissenberg. For anything about your data, write to pedweiss@hotmail.com.
Playing without an account
You can play a few games without an account. Nothing about you is sent to us: your points and the count of games played stay in your own browser (its local storage) and you can erase them by clearing the site data in the browser.
What we keep when you create an account
- Your account: the name you chose, your e-mail address, the date the account was created, whether the e-mail was confirmed, and your password in a form that cannot be read back (a salted hash).
- Your profile: points, games played and won in each game, medals, the flag beside your name (a country flag, or a small picture you drew in Create my Flag), your friend code and the last time you were on the site.
- Your friends: the requests you sent or received and the friendships you accepted.
- Your challenges: the game, your score, the mark of each answer (right or wrong), who you played against and the result.
- Your sessions: a random code kept in a cookie so that you stay logged in for up to 30 days.
- For safety: a count of recent log-in, sign-up and password-reset attempts by e-mail address and by internet address (IP), erased after 24 hours.
What we use it for
- To let you log in and keep your points, flag, friends and challenges (the service you asked for when you created the account).
- To send the two e-mails of the account: the one that confirms your address and the one that lets you choose a new password. We do not send advertising.
- To protect the accounts against password guessing and abuse (our legitimate interest in keeping the site safe).
What other players can see
- Your name, your flag and your level (average points per game) can appear to other players: in challenges, in the list of people online and in the list of people they played with.
- Friends you accepted also see your points, games played, wins and most played game.
- Your e-mail address is never shown to other players.
Cookies and browser storage
- General Knowledge uses only what is needed for the site to work: one cookie that keeps you logged in, one that remembers the language you chose, and the browser's local storage for your points and preferences.
- There are no advertising cookies and no visitor-tracking tools. Because of that the site does not show a cookie banner.
Companies that handle the data for us
- Cloudflare hosts the site and its database. Like any hosting company, it processes the internet address (IP) of each visit to deliver the pages and stop attacks.
- Resend delivers the account e-mails; it receives your e-mail address and the text of the message.
- In the Zoom City game the satellite pictures come straight from Esri's map service, which therefore receives the internet address of your device.
- These companies may keep data on computers outside Brazil. We do not sell or give your data to anyone else.
How long we keep it
- Your account, profile, friends and challenges are kept while the account exists.
- When you delete the account (Settings → Delete account), your account, profile, friendships and sessions are erased at once. Challenges that you finished stay in the other player's history without your name.
- Password-reset links last 60 minutes, e-mail confirmation links 48 hours, sessions 30 days.
Your rights
- You can see and correct your name and flag in Settings, download a file with everything we keep about you (Settings → Download my data) and delete your account there too.
- You can also ask us to confirm what we keep, to correct it, to erase it or to explain how it is used by writing to pedweiss@hotmail.com. We answer within 15 days.
- If you live in Brazil and think your data was handled wrongly, you can complain to the national data protection authority (ANPD).
Children and teenagers
General Knowledge does not ask for anyone's age. Playing without an account does not ask for any personal data. If you are under 18, create an account together with a parent or guardian; a parent or guardian can write to pedweiss@hotmail.com to see or delete a child's account.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new text is published on this page with its date. If the change is important, logged-in players are told on the site.
